How to Know if Your Child Should See an Orthodontist

,

If your child has good dental hygiene habits, you may think they are safe from needing braces or aligners. However, over four million people in the U.S. wear braces, approximately 75% of whom are children under 18. This article will discuss when a child needs to visit an orthodontist and how the orthodontist analyzes the problem.

When Should a Child See an Orthodontist?

Several signs may show that a child needs to see an orthodontist. Some of the most common issues are:

  • Crowding or spacing of teeth
  • Overbite or underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite
  • Teeth that are protruding
  • Teeth that aren’t aligned properly
  • Difficulty biting or chewing
  • Speech problems
  • Breathing issues

An orthodontist can assess your child’s dental and facial growth and suggest the best approaches to addressing any issues.

How an Orthodontist Diagnose a Child’s Dental Problems

An orthodontist diagnoses a child’s dental problems through a comprehensive examination. During the consultation, the orthodontist checks the child’s teeth, jaw, and facial structure to determine if anything is problematic or needs to be cared for.

This process may include taking X-rays, photographs, and teeth impressions. After the examination, the orthodontist provides a customized treatment plan for the child’s needs. Then, the child’s progress must be monitored and checked to ensure the treatment works correctly.

At What Age Should Children Visit an Orthodontist?

Children should generally have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. This may seem young, but it’s essential to catch any potential orthodontic issues early on while the child’s jaw and teeth are still developing.

At this age, the orthodontist can assess the child’s bite and jaw growth patterns to determine if any problems may require intervention. Early detection and treatment can often prevent more serious issues from developing later.

Benefits of Early Orthodontic Care for Children

Early orthodontic care for children can have numerous benefits. Primarily, it helps the orthodontist detect potential problems before they become severe, saving time and money and preventing discomfort in the future.

Here are some potential benefits of early orthodontic care for children:

  • Improved tooth and jaw alignment
  • Reduced risk of tooth decay and gum disease
  • Improved speech development
  • Better chewing and digestion
  • Enhanced facial aesthetics and self-esteem
  • Avoidance of more invasive and expensive treatments later in life

Teeth Whitening: Is it Better at Home or the Orthodontist Office?

Nowadays, there are many things that you can do on your own. With the internet, we live in the age of DIY. Some DIY products even boast that they can do as good of a job as professionals or better. While we can’t speak for every DIY product in every field, we can tell you that in-office teeth whitening will always be better than an at-home teeth whitening kit.

Noticeable Results After Just One Appointment

First, you should whiten your teeth at Blue Ridge Orthodontics instead of at home because you will see results right after your appointment. We use Phillips Zoom Whitening products and White Speed Light-Activated Whitening System to whiten patients’ teeth in around two hours. While most DIY methods and products tell you to expect results within two to three weeks, we will encourage you to look in the mirror directly after your appointment.

Better Results that Last Longer

A DIY method or product doesn’t provide an actual professional to look at your teeth to determine if you are a good candidate for teeth whitening. We offer a free consultation with an orthodontist to make sure your teeth are in good condition before moving forward. Examining your teeth before whitening is crucial because we want the best possible results.

Most whitening products and methods whiten the surface of your teeth. While surface whitening is excellent, it doesn’t target the discoloration inside your teeth. Blue Ridge Orthodontics’ teeth whitening methods work better and last longer because they penetrate within your teeth. Zoom whitening also has a higher whitening percentage than over-the-counter products which is why it must be handled with care in our office.

An extra perk of completing your zoom whitening treatment at BRO is that we include a set of retainers and a whitening syringe in your take-home kit! This gives you the option to further whiten your smile after your treatment. We also include a sensitivity relief gel in your take-home kit to help with any post-treatment sensitivity.

Less Risk of Damaging Your Teeth

Arguably the best benefit of coming to our office for teeth whitening is the insured safety. DIY methods such as hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda can cause damage to your teeth. Also, people using these methods without supervision can suffer from increased teeth sensitivity.

We understand that the biggest reason for using DIY methods and products is budget, but we encourage you to save until you can visit us! Our teeth whitening methods use the latest technology to brighten your smile in around two hours. We want you to stay safe and smile with great teeth, so make your teeth whitening appointment today!

Why Do Braces Need Adjustments?

,

Although usually teens get braces, more and more adults are deciding to correct crooked or misaligned teeth by getting braces. If you recently got braces, you may wonder why you must return to the orthodontist for adjustments. After all, don’t braces straighten your teeth automatically? The truth is that braces need regular adjustments to ensure that they’re working effectively and that you’re on track to achieve the desired results. This article will explore why braces need adjustments and what you can expect during your appointments.

Why Adjustments?

Your teeth are not static objects. Instead, they shift and move in response to pressure. Braces apply gentle, constant pressure to your teeth, gradually moving them into the desired position. That’s why the orthodontist must regularly adjust the braces to ensure that the pressure is applied correctly and that your teeth are moving in the right direction.

Additionally, as your teeth move, the wires and brackets of the braces can loosen or be damaged. Adjustments allow your orthodontist to tighten or replace these components, ensuring your braces function correctly.

What Happens During an Adjustment Appointment?

During an adjustment appointment, your orthodontist will examine your braces and teeth to determine what changes must be made. In addition, they may take x-rays or other images to see how your teeth are moving.

Once they clearly understand your progress, your orthodontist will make the necessary adjustments to your braces. This may involve tightening or loosening wires, replacing brackets, or making other changes to the appliance.

While adjustments can be uncomfortable, the discomfort typically lasts only a short time. Your orthodontist will work quickly to make the necessary changes and then check to make sure everything is functioning correctly before you leave.

How Often Do You Need Adjustments?

The frequency of your adjustment appointments will depend on your treatment plan. However, most patients visit their orthodontist for adjustments every 4-8 weeks. However, it’s important to note that every case is unique, and your orthodontist will determine the best schedule for your needs. In addition, they will determine the frequency of your appointments based on how quickly your teeth are moving and how much correction is needed.

What Happens If You Don’t Get Adjustments?

If you don’t get regular adjustments for your braces, your treatment may take longer to complete or may not be as effective as it could be. Additionally, if your braces become damaged or broken and you don’t get them fixed, it could lead to other dental problems.

It’s important to follow your orthodontist’s recommended treatment plan and attend all of your scheduled appointments to ensure the best possible outcome for your orthodontic treatment.

Long-term Benefits of Straight Teeth

,

If you don’t like your smile, you’re not alone: plenty of people don’t like their smile. In fact, 57 percent of Americans cover their mouths while laughing because they’re insecure about how their teeth look. You might think straightening your teeth is a complex process that costs a lot of money, but we make it easy and cost-effective.

If you’ve had crooked teeth, an underbite, or an overbite, your whole life, you might still think it’s fine to live that way. After all, the saying is, “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.” But having straight teeth will improve your quality of life in the future, and we want what’s best for you.

Not having your teeth aligned is detrimental, and you’re probably unaware of the benefits of aligned teeth. You’ll learn why you should straighten your teeth here!

Come into Blue Ridge Orthodontics if you’re considering braces or other means of straightening your teeth. Request an appointment here!

Straight Teeth are Easy to Clean

Everyone brushes their teeth twice a day and flosses to prevent plaque build-up. But it takes more work for people with crooked teeth, underbites, or overbites. Crooked teeth can create pockets of hard-to-reach places; if they’re hard to reach, they’ll be hard to brush.

Unbrushed areas lead to plaque build-up. After a certain amount of time, plaque hardens and becomes tartar which is harder to clean and discolors the teeth. Plaque can also cause cavities that permanently damage the tooth by developing holes. An untreated cavity leads to a broken tooth.

Plaque can also cause gum disease, or gingivitis, which leads to tooth loss if untreated. You get the point. Plaque is terrible, and straight teeth allow you to hit all necessary nooks and crannies easily! Imagine not having to concentrate on brushing crooked teeth. Straight teeth help you give all teeth equal care.

Straight Teeth Help with Life Longevity

Straight teeth can improve your quality of life by making eating easier and decreasing the chances of diseases. A study in 2016 has shown that infected teeth are connected to coronary disease. Coronary disease causes chest pain, lightheadedness, and more dangerous symptoms. If untreated, you could have a heart attack or develop an arrhythmia.

Eating Will Be More Comfortable with Straight Teeth

Eating can be hard when your teeth are out of alignment due to an underbite or overbite. The average person uses 70 lbs per square inch of bite force when chewing food. You know it isn’t comfortable if you’ve ever bit down on your teeth while trying to eat food. In fact, it probably hurt so bad that it ruined your appetite. One of the benefits of straight teeth is you don’t even have to worry about biting another tooth.

Straight Teeth Improve Confidence

Nothing is more welcoming than a smile, but 7 in 10 people feel insecure about their smile. Instead of feeling insecure about it, book an appointment. Our doctors and staff have resurrected confidence by straightening teeth with braces for years. We help adults straighten their teeth, and we help teens get braces or Invisalign as well. Blue Ridge Orthodontics office has everything you need for a beautiful smile, from whitening to oral surgery!

Dr. Roberts, founder of Blue Ridge Orthodontics, has created his own at-home teeth-straightening kit

Dr. T. Luke Roberts, D.M.D., M.S.D., founder and leader of the Blue Ridge Orthodontics practice located in Asheville, Brevard, and Hendersonville, has been on a journey of smiles for quite a number of years.

“Having grown up in a medical family who spent our summers working on medical missions, I knew that I wanted to work in a field that has a positive impact on the lives of others. Because of my exposure to patients with cleft lip and palate during those medical missions, I was drawn to the phenomenal change that improving the smile can have on people,” says Dr. Roberts. “I once participated in the cleft lip repair of a 68-year-old woman in the Dominican Republic — and the happiness and gratitude that she showed when we were finished has stuck with me since that day. I chose orthodontics because I knew I would be able to create that positive change in self-image for people every day.”

Seeing how his patients’ smiles change for the better is a daily joy for Dr. Roberts.

As the owner of Blue Ridge Orthodontics, devoted husband, and active father to his children, Quinn, Emma, and Charlie, Dr. Roberts understands the struggle of not being able to find extra time in your day. He knew there were adults that desired a straighter smile but had not been able to find the time to invest in the frequent appointments that traditional treatment options like braces and Invisalign required. This is what lead Dr. Roberts to think about creating an at-home treatment option.

Dr. Roberts, Asheville, NC at-home teeth-straightening kit

When researching the current market for at-home aligner companies, Dr. Roberts saw some common shortcomings:

#1  Lack of Access to Professionals

Other at-home aligner companies were facilitated by a one-time trip to a mobile practitioner, or even a singular virtual visit. The doctors planning treatment for a lot of the other at-home aligner companies are actually just dentists who have taken a three-day course on clear aligners. Orthodontists complete dental school and then complete additional years of school to learn how to safely and accurately straighten your teeth to give you a smile you’re proud of without causing future issues.

On top of the other companies’ treatment being planned by less experienced doctors, meaning there is no course correction if something does not go as planned. This could lead to months of improper alignment that significantly disrupts their path to a perfect smile, not to mention the money lost in the process, and even potential permanent damage to teeth and bite. Teeth can do things we do not expect. That’s why it’s important to do semi-regular check-ins and to have the option to call your orthodontist to ensure that everything is moving in line.

#2  DIY Mold Kits

These at-home programs begin with a molding kit sent to you to make your own DIY impression for your aligners. When you only have one shot and it’s your first attempt at making a mold of your teeth, it is quite common for the DIY impression to be inaccurate. It’s risky business basing all of the aligners off a less than perfect craft experiment.

With Impressions, we can deliver accuracy each time, because we always start treatment with a 3D iTero of your teeth! It’s quick, painless and carried out by a trained professional. The scan also doesn’t leave a bad taste in your mouth like the putty from the at-home impressions kits do. After your 3-D scan, you’ll also get to see what your teeth will look like after treatment before you ever get started or pay for anything. Other at-home aligner companies don’t offer this.

#3  High Chance of Unsatisfying Results

Surely one of the most intriguing qualities of at-home kits is the low price tag. However, without supervision and professional advice it is not common for patients to get to the last aligner and still have hope for more. Then, these patients will have to go to an orthodontist and course-correct using costly treatment – something they were trying to avoid.

This is not an issue with Impressions. Impressions is 50% cheaper than traditional Invisalign without the sacrifice of quality that comes with these other at-home aligner programs.

Impressions+ : How our advanced treatment option from Invisalign could be the winner for you

Impressions+ : How our advanced treatment option from Invisalign could be the winner for you

At this point, you’ve likely done some research and saw all of the options we offer for orthodontic treatment here at Blue Ridge Orthodontics. Does clear aligner treatment sound like the option for you? Clear aligners come with many benefits, such as the ability to eat what you want, keep your metal-free smile intact, and allow you to more easily maintain your oral hygiene while straightening your smile. However, traditional routes like Invisalign require many appointments and are a larger investment. This is where Impressions+ comes in – the new, more advanced version of our local, at-home clear aligner treatment, Impressions.

Whether you’re walking in with mild or moderate orthodontic concerns, Impressions+ may be the option for you! Impressions+ is a great middle-ground treatment option between Impressions and Invisalign. Impressions+ requires a smaller time commitment than Invisalign, is 25% lower cost, and it can still resolve most of the issues that Invisalign can tackle.

Let’s compare all of your options for clear aligner treatment from Blue Ridge Orthodontics:

Impressions, Impressions+, and Invisalign at-home aligner Treatment comparison

Impressions+
Correct more smile issues, for less.

6 Office Visits

Impressions+ requires fewer trips to the office than Invisalign, but more than Impressions, meaning that your trusted orthodontists at Blue Ridge Orthodontics can keep a closer eye on your smile’s progress and can answer any questions you have along the way. Some might say Impressions+ is a perfect balance! Lowering your trips to our office reduces your time and money invested.

Treats Mild to Moderate Issues

Before Impressions+, Impressions could only treat mild orthodontic concerns because aligners alone can only do so much to correct spacing, crowding, over and underbite issues. With the addition of attachments, like the ones that come with Invisalign, we’re able to treat mild to severe orthodontic issues for less! Attachments are the little enamel-colored buttons, we adhere to your teeth that help shift and move teeth into alignment.

Could Impressions+ be for me?

Impressions+ is for the person that wants top-quality treatment but maybe doesn’t want to pay full price for comprehensive treatment, or who doesn’t have the time to come to our office every 6-8 weeks. Impressions+ provides the perfect balance of appointments with your doctor, for less. Find the perfect balance with Impressions+. Impressions Consultation (1)

From Self-Conscious to Confident Smile with Clear Aligners

Thinking about straightening your smile with our at-home treatment, Impressions? Hear from real Impressions patient, Audra, to see how her confidence changed forever.

We’ve all been teased. Some would say it’s a right of passage in junior high and high school. But I can still remember how mean teenagers can be. It doesn’t feel like a right of passage – more like torture.

I mostly got called a nerd. Second in the running was “Jolly Green Giant” because I towered over most of my friends and peers right up until graduation. I also occasionally got picked on because my one front tooth edged out just a little ahead of the others, like it was trying to win a race. It was only one tooth, but that was all it took for the other hormonal high schoolers to make me feel like an outcast.

I didn’t mind being called a nerd, because I liked being smart. I didn’t mind being singled out for being close to six feet tall, because it made me better at sports. What I didn’t like was the one bucktooth. That was something that could have been changed. I could have had a set of braces slapped on my teeth, like so many of my peers, and then come out the other side with teeth lined up like soldiers in a regiment. But, I didn’t get braces.

“We can’t afford that,” my parents said. I said that was okay, even though it didn’t feel okay. After that, when I opened and closed my mouth I could feel that delinquent tooth rubbing just slightly more against the inside of my mouth – a reminder that I didn’t have a straight smile like my friends, or even the bullies. It was also a reminder that my parents didn’t have 5k or more to fix my teeth.

I smiled less at graduation because of that tooth. I smiled less at my friends, family and new acquaintances. I smiled less when I got my first job. All because of that one tooth.

Ten years later, I finally decided to straighten my teeth. I was pretty dang sick of talking out of one side of my mouth – the side of my mouth where my teeth looked perfectly normal – and was tired of the weird face I made in pictures.

“Your teeth are pretty straight. Have you had braces before?” Dr. Roberts asked me.

I was shocked. No, I hadn’t had braces before. Couldn’t he see that one tooth that was sticking way out in front of all the others? Couldn’t he see that it had caused kids to pick on me?

No, he couldn’t see the insecurities that the one little tooth had caused my whole life, but he listened when I told him. He also listened when I told him I didn’t want braces because, while braces may have been acceptable in high school, I didn’t want them as an adult.

I embarked on my new smile journey. The clear aligners straightened my teeth right up. In 14 months, that tooth was back in line where he was supposed to be. No one was going to pick on me about my smile ever again.

Impressions Before After

When I finished my treatment and looked at the before and after photos, I couldn’t believe what I saw. Looking back, I could see that my tooth wasn’t actually that far out of line and that my smile wasn’t actually that crooked. I guess to me it had felt like it was really crooked because I harbored so much insecurity about it. Had I needed clear aligners at all? Then, I realized something. Confidence gives you a whole new perspective. Once I had a straight, beautiful smile that I wasn’t insecure about anymore, I couldn’t imagine tolerating anyone picking on me for one tooth. I was so comfortable with my teeth that I almost couldn’t imagine a time when I was uncomfortable.

I think that’s the power of truly feeling good about yourself, and that’s why orthodontic treatment – like Impressions – is so important. Having insecurities and being self-conscious are real things. Whether you have one tooth out of line, or a whole mouth of crooked teeth, the effect of feeling insecure about your smile can do the same damage. From a medical standpoint did I really need my teeth straightened? No. From a self-confidence perspective did I need my teeth straightened? Absolutely.

I can tell you Impressions treatment made a world of difference for me. I like smiling now, and that changes everything.

The Blue Ridge Orthodontics team

Jessica’s Experience with Impressions At-Home Aligners

Thinking about straightening your smile with our at-home treatment, Impressions? Hear from real Impressions patient, Jessica.

Blue Ridge Orthodontics has developed Impressions, an at-home treatment based on the proven Invisalign® system for improving smiles. Are you a busy mom? Have no time for many “extra” things in your day? Impressions was made for you! BRO’s own Dr. Roberts created Impressions to provide the option for busy people to get great orthodontic treatment from home!

Jessica is an Appalachian State student that was looking towards the orthodontists at Blue Ridge Orthodontics to help straighten her smile again. Jessica had had her teeth straightened through braces when she was younger, but her teeth had shifted again. It’s important to me to straighten my smile because it’s part of what makes a first impression”, she says. After her trip to see the team at Blue Ridge Orthodontics, they agreed that Impressions treatment was the perfect fit for her smile goals.

Keep reading to learn more about Jessica’s steps to a straighter smile with Impressions at-home treatment from BRO.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO TAKE ANOTHER STEP TO A STRAIGHTER SMILE?

Jessica: I had braces when I was younger but I didn’t wear my retainers like I was supposed to so my teeth started overlapping again. It’s important to me to straighten my smile because it’s part of what makes a good first impression. I wanted to be confident in my smile and be able to feel good about the way my smile looked in pictures.

Jessica was fully expecting the BRO doctors to tell her that she needed braces again and she was dreading having to go through that whole process while in college! Feeling that it would make her insecure around her peers, Jessica hoped that there would be a more invisible option for her. When the BRO doctors told her about their at-home clear aligner treatment, Impressions, Jessica was elated, “I was so glad when they said I could get impressions because they are invisible and no one would notice I had them.“

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE IMPRESSIONS OVER OTHER AT HOME CLEAR ALIGNER COMPANIES?

Jessica trusted her doctors at BRO and their recommendation of Impressions. She liked that she knew and trusted the doctors and had a team of experts she could reach out to with questions. Those benefits made Impressions a much better option than other at-home clear aligner treatments.

WHY DO YOU LIKE AT-HOME TREATMENT?

Jessica: I have really been enjoying the at-home treatment because with COVID-19 making things like in-person treatment and appointments more difficult, I don’t have to worry about any of that. I have everything I need at home and the instruction guide has helped me know how to take care of my trays and it’s been a super easy process.

The ease of the Impressions process went above and beyond Jessica’s expectations. When she received her Impressions box she was delighted to see multiple trays along with other fun things like the cleaning crystals and aligner case.

Impressions Tools

HOW DID YOU FIND THE ADJUSTMENT OF WEARING AND MAINTAINING YOUR ALIGNERS?

Jessica: Maintaining the aligners is super easy because the cleaning crystals are provided in the box and then I just brush the aligners when I brush my teeth. All of the aligners fit really well and I’m always excited to get to wear a new aligner.

“Watching my smile transform has been my very favorite thing. My teeth are straightening so much and I’m surprised it’s happening so quickly. Every week I can see improvements and it’s definitely given me some more confidence.”

Wearing aligners can sometimes be uncomfortable at first while your teeth and mouth get used to them. Taking Tylenol or Ibuprofen at the start of your treatment and eating and drinking items that are cold can help to ease discomfort.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE THINKING ABOUT STRAIGHTENING THEIR SMILE?

Jessica: I would tell anyone who is thinking about straightening their smile to go for it! Having a straight smile and pretty teeth are such a payoff. I would recommend getting impressions to anyone but especially people like me who didn’t necessarily want the braces look. The Impressions journey for me so far has been a breeze. It’s super simple and easy and fun, and it has all the same outcomes as getting braces.

At the time of writing this, Jessica is six weeks into her treatment and as you see from her answers above she is loving it! Impressions is a great treatment option for you if you want to transform your smile discreetly and without the hassle of regular appointments. Blue Ridge Orthodontic’s wants to make sure that our patients and team feel safe coming into our office. Due to COVID-19 things might look a little different when you come in, but the friendly service will always remain the same!

Our priority is always the safety of our patients, staff, and community. We are following the new recommendations regarding COVID-19 made by the American Dental Association (ADA), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). We are actively monitoring these agencies to ensure our infectious control procedures are current. We are adhering to or exceeding each agencies’ recommendations. We aim to go above and beyond those requirements to protect our patients with the precautions below.

As a result, you will experience some changes when it is time for your next appointment. We ask for your cooperation and understanding in the implementation of these changes.

HOW OUR OFFICE HAS IMPROVED

How BRO keeps a healthy and disinfected office during COVID-19

HOW YOUR APPOINTMENT WILL CHANGE

Prior to your Appointment:

  • Prior to your appointment, our office will ask you the required health screening questions. You’ll also be asked to fill out a Wellness Screening and Informed Consent upon your arrival for your appointment.
  • If you or your child require special accommodations due to medical conditions, please let us know when we are scheduling your appointment.
  • Brushing stations will remain closed, please come to your appointment with immaculate oral hygiene.

When you arrive to see us:

  1. Please arrive 10 minutes early to your appointment to fill out our Wellness Screening paperwork and have your temperature taken.
  2. You will call to check-in upon your arrival and be asked to wait in your car until we notify you that you’re cleared to enter the building. The front door will remain locked and there will be signs on all of our doors that reiterate this new process.
  3. We ask that only the patient come in for their appointment. If a parent would like to escort their child, then only one parent will be allowed and will also be subject to the full check-in protocol, including wearing a mask.
  4. We will be taking the temperature of everyone that enters the building.
  5. We have a hand sanitizer station that we will ask you to use when you enter the office.

During your Appointment:

  • We will try our best to maintain social distancing in situations where it is possible, otherwise like during examination we will be taking every precaution to keep you and ourselves safe while continuing to do our job.

After your Appointment:

    • Be sure to schedule your next appointment on your way out. Your oral health is connected to your overall health, so one of the many ways you can stay healthy during these times is to keep up with regular dental care. We are here for you.
    • If you start to experience symptoms of COVID-19 within 2 days of your appointment, call to alert the office staff so those who came into contact with you may be tested.

We are open to accommodating our patients that are high-risk or don’t absolutely have to come into the office by providing virtual consultations. If you would like to schedule a new patient virtual consultation or appointment, click here.
