Why Might Someone Need Braces?

Here are some reasons why people of all ages seek braces for orthodontic treatment:

Getting Teeth Straightened

When teeth come in at inappropriate places, it can lead to myriad types of discomfort. Not only may crooked teeth cause lessened confidence or social unease, they can cause physical issues, too. These include:

  • Trouble speaking
  • Issues with chewing and swallowing
  • Decreased oral health and problems with the gums
  • More cavities (because crooked teeth are harder to clean!)

Do you or your children have teeth that seem crowded or oddly misaligned? This isn’t an issue that will go away on its own, and almost always gets worse if left untreated. Take control of your health by making a free consultation appointment at our Asheville, Hendersonville or Brevard office.

Improving A Bite

A malocclusion, or bad bite, can cause complications that lead to premature wear and breakdown of the teeth, and discomfort and pain when chewing food. Does your child complain about experiencing jaw pain? Do you hear clicking or popping in your jaw? This is often caused by a misaligned bite. A misaligned bite can lead to worn and cracked teeth and overexposed nerves in the mouth.

Did you know that braces can be used to align the jaw as they straighten crooked teeth? This will improve your bite and can prevent significant speech impediments from developing in children.

Improving Oral Health

We all know that keeping your teeth clean and flossing regularly are very important. However, crooked teeth can make it more difficult to do that.

It’s not uncommon to find significant plaque buildup in a mouth hampered by crooked teeth – just ask your dentist! We aren’t just talking about bad breath, minor cavities and gingivitis. Poor oral hygiene can have a serious negative impact on your overall health.

Want to reduce your risk of developing diabetes or heart disease? Good oral hygiene has been linked to a reduced risk of developing chronic medical conditions like these. The team at BRO thinks that is a very good reason to get braces!

We can also teach you how to brush your teeth with braces.

If you are living with one of these bite problems, our doctors will work with you to identify the most appropriate orthodontic treatment plan. We also can help you to whiten your teeth after treatment to really make your smile shine! Please call us at 828-585-6045, and we can set up a free consultation at our office.

What Types of Braces Do You Offer?

Blue Ridge Orthodontics offers adults, teens and children a wide variety of braces and orthodontic treatment options.

Here’s a breakdown of the different types of braces we offer at Blue Ridge Orthodontics:

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are what most people think of when you say “braces,” but today’s braces are more comfortable than ever. Small metal brackets are attached to the front of each tooth. The orthodontist then runs a thin wire through each of these brackets. Rubber bands are added last, in hues that patients can choose to create a uniquely colorful smile. Patients come back to the office every 8 to 12 weeks, so the orthodontist can adjust their wire. This process applies a gentle pressure that moves the teeth into alignment over time.

Self-Ligating Braces

Made from the same materials as traditional braces, self-ligating braces don’t use rubber bands to hold the wire in place. A specialized clip helps the wire guide teeth into place with light pressure.

Clear (Ceramic) Braces

Typically for adults and teens who want less visible braces, ceramic braces feature clear brackets. Most people won’t even notice that you are wearing ceramic braces. Our ceramic braces are made of special materials and are available in various degrees of transparency. Some patients opt for ceramic braces that resemble the color of their teeth and others want them to be translucent. While they are less obvious than metal braces, they are slightly larger, more fragile and require more care with oral hygiene.

We have some more information, if you’d like to learn more about how traditional metal braces and ceramic braces differ.

Lingual Braces

With lingual braces, brackets are placed on the backside of your teeth — so your smile is free from visible metal or wires. These braces behind your teeth are custom made, shaped exactly and uniquely for you. Lingual braces can be an appropriate treatment option for athletes, models, actors/actresses and musicians who play wind instruments.

Invisalign®

Invisalign® is among the newest ways to straighten teeth. Without brackets and wires, Invisalign® uses clear aligners or trays that are comfortable, removable and nearly invisible. Teeth are gradually adjusted, just like with traditional braces. Since you can take your aligner out, you can eat or drink whatever you want, and brushing and flossing are easy.

Play sports or a musical instrument? Invisalign® trays don’t create performance challenges. Plus, no one will even know you’re wearing them! Invisalign® is available for both adults and teens at BRO. See our in-depth Invisalign® page for more details.

Impressions

Blue Ridge Orthodontics has developed Impressions, an at-home treatment approach based on the proven Invisalign® system for improving smiles. Impressions provides the comfortable, easy-to-use and virtually invisible advantages of Invisalign® at a lower cost and with no monthly check-in appointments. Designed for adults and teens who want the quality of Invisalign® in a home-managed form, Impressions offers flexibility and a price about half that of traditional Invisalign or conventional braces. Check out our Impressions page for more information.

What Is It Like to Get Braces Put On?

Getting your braces put on is a big day! Whether you’re super excited, or a little nervous, the BRO staff will have you covered from the moment you walk in the door! Think of this section as a simple guide for those who are curious about the process of attaching braces and what it’ll feel like.

Putting on most types of braces takes about an hour and a half or less. For traditional metal braces, the process is as follows:

  • One of our orthodontic assistants will clean and dry your teeth thoroughly.
  • Bonding glue will be carefully applied to your teeth in order to attach each bracket.
  • Brackets will be carefully placed on the teeth and expertly positioned by your orthodontist, then the glue will be hardened by a blue light.
  • An archwire will then be run through the brackets.
  • Finally, the archwire will be secured in place with your choice of colored (or clear!) elastic bands.
