7 Foods To Eat After Your Oral Surgery
Let’s be honest—getting your wisdom teeth pulled isn’t exactly anyone’s idea of a fun weekend in Asheville. But it happens!
If you are scheduled for oral surgery with us at Blue Ridge Orthodontics, you probably have one big question on your mind as you prep for your appointment: “What on earth am I going to eat?” It’s tempting to think you can just live on milkshakes and Netflix for a week. But our oral surgeons always joke with our patients that while an all-ice-cream diet sounds great in theory, your body actually desperately needs real nutrients to heal. Your mouth needs a break, but your immune system needs protein, vitamins, and minerals to repair tissue and get your energy back up.

So, before you head into our office, hit the grocery store. Whether it’s wisdom teeth removal, dental extractions, or an expose and bond procedure, here are the 7 best foods to stock in your kitchen for a smooth, speedy recovery.
1. Greek Yogurt
This is a post-surgery staple for a reason. It’s cool, creamy, and loaded with protein and calcium. It takes zero effort to eat and feels great on sore gums.
The catch: Buy the plain or vanilla kind. Skip the yogurts with strawberry chunks or blackberry seeds. You do not want tiny seeds getting stuck where your teeth used to be!
2. Blended Soups
Think creamy tomato, butternut squash, or potato soup. You get all the flavor and veggie nutrients without having to chew a single bite.
The catch: Temperature matters just as much as texture! Our surgical assistants will remind you a dozen times before you leave the chair: do not eat piping-hot food. It can dissolve the blood clots that are trying to heal your mouth. Eat your soup lukewarm or even cold.
3. Mashed Potatoes
The ultimate comfort food. They are filling, packed with potassium, and give your body the calories it needs when you aren’t eating much else. Go ahead and load them up with butter or sour cream to make them extra smooth. Sweet potatoes work great, too.
4. Scrambled Eggs
Unless you’re vegan, eggs are going to be your best friend. They are one of the easiest ways to get high-quality protein into your system to speed up healing. Scramble them so they stay fluffy and easy to swallow with minimal jaw movement.
5. Banana “Nice” Cream
Okay, we know we said you can’t live on milkshakes, but you can have “nice” cream. Traditional ice cream is loaded with sugar, which isn’t great for inflammation. Instead, chop up 3 or 4 bananas, freeze them overnight, and blend them the next day with a splash of milk. It has the exact same texture as soft serve, but it’s packed with natural energy and potassium.
6. Mashed Avocado
Avocados are full of healthy fats and vitamins that actually help your blood clot and reduce inflammation. Just mash one up with a fork and add a little salt.
The catch: Hold off on the spicy salsa, cayenne, or heavy black pepper for now. Spicy stuff will seriously sting a healing mouth.
7. Smoothies (Read the Warning!)
Smoothies are awesome because you can throw yogurt, fruit, and spinach into a blender and get a whole meal in a glass.
THE MAJOR WARNING: Do not use a straw. We can’t stress this enough. Sucking on a straw creates suction in your mouth that can pull the healing blood clot right out of your gums. It causes something called “dry socket,” and trust us, it hurts. Drink your smoothie directly from the rim of the glass or eat it with a spoon.

A Quick List of What to AVOID
You’ll need to hold off on your favorite crunchy crust from White Duck Taco Shop for at least a week. While you are healing, absolutely avoid:
Crunchy stuff: Chips, popcorn, and nuts can easily tear up healing gums.
Chewy stuff: Steak, beef jerky, or gummy candies require way too much jaw work.
Seeds and grains: Quinoa, rice, chia seeds, and anything that can get trapped in the surgical site.
